It's time for another Mix Tape Shuffle, and I would like to take this opportunity to cordially invite YOU to participate in (this or) future Mix Tape Shuffles. They're a LOT of fun, I promise! And since this is the "drinking songs" edition, this can be like our first mixer - or with St. Patty's Day coming up later in the month, it can be our first pub crawl if that's more your speed!
Okay, confession time (yes, AGAIN.). I had a lot of trouble with this one. At first I picked only songs about drinking - then scrapped it because that was more of a "theme" than a mix tape suggestion. See, I love music, and I love music when I drink....which isn't often, but you get the picture, I'm sure. But y'all. You guys. All yous....I culled SO MUCH from this list! Oh my.
I do love to get a good buzz going - and KEEP it going - and back off a bit (gotta pace myself, you know) - and then start up again. So my "mix tape" may come across as all over the place. And it is, but I promise there is a method to my madness (the getting started, having fun, pacing, etc)! Without further ado, I present to you my drinking-inspired playlist, based entirely on my mood at the time this post was composed - which apparently wasn't mellow. I do enjoy mellow drinking, too, but maybe that will be another post for another time. Okay, the playlist, for real this time:
Setting the mood; getting the party started.
Poison - "Nothing But A Good Time"
Buckcherry - "All Lit Up" (I feel the need to add the disclaimer that I do NOT do coke. But I sure do love this song!
Time to mellow out for a few.
Zac Brown Band - "Toes"
Van Halen - "Cabo Wabo" - please forgive the use of Van Hagar. This is such a good song, though!
Are we feeling pretty good yet? Good! Now we can just dance and sing along for the next little while.
The Clash - "Should I Stay Or Should I Go"
Snoop Dogg - "Gin and Juice"
DMX - "Party Up"
The Rolling Stones - "Honky Tonk Woman" - Oh, hell yeah!
Did someone ask for some country music? Why yes, they did! Here ya go.
Merle Haggard (with Waylon Jennings and Charley Pride) - "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" - Don't be ashamed now, sing along with me!
That was fun! Let's go grab some shots and our last drinks and finish the night off!
Drivin N Cryin - "Straight To Hell"
Beck - "Time Bomb"
The Doors - "L.A. Woman" - this is the time of night where I like to let Jim Morrison's voice wash over me and the song that makes me feel like I'm a gorgeous go-go dancer and I at least give it my best shot. No shadow box? No go-go cage? No problem. Tabletops work just fine!
And now it's the end of the night.
REM - "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" - Aw, the memories! This was my first real "drinking song." My college friends and I loved drinking and singing this at the top of our lungs at parties. And you better believe we took a giant breath and belted out EVERY. SINGLE. WORD.
I hope you had as much fun as me with this Mix Tape Shuffle!
Love Poison.
ReplyDeleteIsh-it-me or did buckcherry sound like pOison?
Then again, maybe I played one of them twice.
Zac ish good. I might have played Uncle Cracker,
"when the sun goes down..."
Van Halen - good memories.
Clash - too many throne memories!
'Gin and Juice'... yeah.
Love "up in here"(up in here).
Aw hell, Merle!! stop the tape.
you don't have to call me darling.. darling...
(one more round.) posum-eating cowboys.
Drivin N Cryin... never heard this un. funny.
I remember having a killer hangover
and my friend played Beck. Blech.
I saw Jim do LA Woman stoned at a concert.
I know, when was he not? Go-go girl.
You know, I hear REM and think of the
Big Bang Theory guys... why?
Don't ask why I'm writing column
style. Whoo! Your write up was killer funny.
You got to see Jim Morrison live? #OMGSOJEALOUS!!!!!! Those were the days! You know, that Buckcherry song and Poison song, especially back to back, do sound really familiar (musically at least). And I'm guessing you're now not a fan of poor Beck? LOL.
DeleteDixie, you should totally Grooveshark a list of YOUR drinking songs, write a quick post, and come join us! I can tell you have some good ones!
My Dad took on extra job at coliseum in my city. I saw a lot of stuff I didn't need to, as a kid. At least Jim stayed on the stage. George Jones walked off of it during his opening song. Ha! They called the show. If I recall, he did about three times that year - different cities. I couldn't stop laughing - my Dad sent me to the office.
DeleteBtw ~ did you play McCarthy's list? Wow - shazam! That's some damn drinking. (smile).
Oh wow, what adventures! Who knew George Jones was acting Axl Rose-ish by walking offstage (before Axl was old enough to even be in a band)? I knew he got arrested for DUI on a riding lawn mower (pretty badass, if I say so myself), but I had no idea he had diva ways, LOL!
DeleteI have not had a chance to play McCarthy's list. I have looked at some of the songs, but haven't started them all in a row yet.
Love it. We've got some overlap here, in songs that I almost picked, a seemingly shared overall distaste for Van Hagar vs. Van Halen (rawr) and "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" which is the best damn song for karaoke, ever.
ReplyDeleteMari, I am not surprised that we have some overlap, OR that we actually chose one of the same songs (I' visited your page before I came back to respond to this comment). Here's where I divulge a litte bit TMI: I don't hate Van Hagar - actually LOVE a good many of their songs. However? There is that overall distaste, because the band with Hagar is so completely different than with Roth, and I really wish they had changed the name. There. I said it. I like Van Hagar, just can't stand the thought of that lineup as Van Halen.
DeleteSince a good many of these are 80s tunes, they bring back memories!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the 80s - 90s is when I did most of my drinking, so of course those are mostly my go-tos :)
DeleteOK, I'll play.
ReplyDeleteEvery one of these tunes was 80-proof tested by me, most of them in the early 1980s when I was still young enough to drink all night and play all day... after waking up on the living room floor... with my bedroom only twelve feet away.
A song for every drinking occasion:
DRINKIN' & THINKIN'... ALONE
HAIR OF THE DOG AT 8 AM
GUYS & KEGS & THE COPS WERE CALLED
HOW TO WAKE UP A SLEEPY BAR IN 30 SECONDS
DRINKIN', KICKIN' ASS AND TAKIN' NAMES
STILL DRINKIN' & KICKIN' ASS BUT TOO DRUNK TO WRITE
JUNGLE JUICE & JUMBLED JARGON
POUR IT ALL NIGHT LONG!
FEELIN' WILD BUT LOOKIN' GOOD
RUM, GOOD FRIENDS & WILD TIMES

Love your list, McCarthy! Van Morrison is ALWAYS good drinking music - and he was quite the drinker himself, wasn't he? Really loved the inclusion of one of my childhood favorites, Warren Zevon, too! Of course, the rest were great, too. This list would have me getting way drunker than I ever intended! Thanks for playing along!
DeleteThanks, KIM, glad you approved.

Well... is he Irish?

I love the Van Morrison skit Jimmy Fallon did!
Deletenot a bad mix at all!! Definitely gotta have some Jim at the end of the evening. Mine would have some Led Zeppelin absolutely. Some New Orleans style blues, maybe some Eagles for that pacing and mellow zone. Probably some dance when I am feeling pretty good. and ending with some Cat Stevens or Nina Simone.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I had Led Zeppelin, Rage Against The Machine, The Eagles, Blues Traveler, Jane's Addiction and some others on here, but simply had to cull it. Almost any music is great drinking music, it just needs to be within the context of your mood :)
