"One good thing about music, when it hits you (you feel no pain)"
-Bob Marley, "Trenchtown Rock"

Now, I give you my favorite Christmas song ever......
Yep! I love Elvis's sultry voice and twangy guitar on this one. And who doesn't love Elvis?
Last week, I did a bunch of different versions of "Run Run Rudolph" and I promise I won't do that this week! But I'd be remiss if I didn't include Georgia rockers Collective Soul's rendition of this song, too.
You see, sometime in the late 90s I signed up for Columbia House (anyone remember THAT?) and I often forgot to send the cards back to decline that month's featured CD. This meant that I ended up with a lot of accidental additions to my music collection because I was also bad at not returning the packages before my kids, young boys at the time, would excitedly open them! One of those CDs was You Sleigh Me, which featured Collective Soul's cover of my favorite Christmas song ever. It is quite the departure from the sound of Elvis and many others who've recorded/performed this.
Enjoy!
And as a non-Christmas-related bonus, here's "Trenchtown Rock" from Bob Marley, the song and artist referenced earlier in this post:
Have yourself a great week, and a Merry Little Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whichever other holiday you may celebrate if this is your last trip here before the holidays. And if you don't celebrate a holiday this time of year, I wish you the best and hope you get to spend precious time iwth your family and/or friends.
I prefer Elvis's version of Blue Christmas both good though
ReplyDeleteTrenchtown Rock excellent choice love Bob Marley and a big fan of reggae
Have a fantastico week :-)
Oh, I absolutely prefer Elvis's version to any other. I just wanted to throw my very close second out there as well.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
I'm with stevebethere, I prefer Elvis' Blue Christmas the best! It's just hard for another artist to top the King! I love Reggae style music, too and you can't help but think of Bob Marley when you think Reggae, right? Thanks for dancing with me today on Monday's Music Moves Me!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, no one can top the King. His fans span generations; you'd probably have to be into 90s alternative to really appreciate the Collective Soul cover.
DeleteThank you for visiting me!
I like Elvis too. And Cathy is right - reggae is synonymous with Bob Marley or it's the other way around. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteBob Marley is definitely synonymous with reggae. AND the other way around, probably. You can't think of one without immediately thinking about the other!
DeleteThanks for coming by today :)
OMG - I'm dying because NOT returning Columbia House CD's is exactly how I discovered a never heard before band called Collective Soul!! And I love them. seriously - I started getting all their discs; including the Christmas one. Love this song - both Elvis and their version.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it always a good time for Marley? :)
Have a Merry Christmas!
LOL, that's awesome! I have always loved Collective Soul, but have to admit I never would have just bought the You Sleigh Me CD.
DeleteThanks for stopping by; it is always good to see you :)
Such choices and love the little frosting on the cake with Marley! Love reggae music. MERRY CHRISTMAS my friend and thanks for sharing and joining us.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dolly, for having me, and for stopping by! I like it - Marley as the frosting on the cake!
DeleteBlue Christmas is so appropriate. It makes me think of all those poor families that are missing their babies right now.
ReplyDeleteMy heart just breaks for those families.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
Ah, I love Blue Christmas and even though I love Elvis it is nice to hear other versions too :)
ReplyDeleteSame here. I've heard some covers, but most have the same type of rhythm as Elvis. This one just sounds so different, and I think it was done really well.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
I have a bit of Elvis up too this week. Your picks are great! Happy Christmas to you.

DeleteSometimes music is the only thing that can speak to your joy, or pain, or just life.
