Never judge a book by its cover.

We've all heard that expression before, and that brings me to one of my favorite things about music: the remake. Or cover. However you say it, I'm talking about when a band performs and/or records a song previously performed and/or recorded by another artist.

Now before you get all aural elitist on me, keep in mind that I already know many of you can't stand covers. But, you see, I am the exact opposite! I love it when a band or artist takes a song that is already familiar and makes it their own. And I could talk about covers for DAYS. I'm not even joking. So naturally, I jumped ALL OVER this week's them at Dolly's: remakes.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

Motley Crue - Smokin' in the Boys Room
(originally recorded by Brownsville Station)

The Power Station - Get It On (Bang a Gong)
(originally recorded by T. Rex)

Dwight Yoakam - Suspicious Minds
(originally recorded by Mark James but obviously made famous by Elvis Presley)

Type O Negative - Cinnamon Girl
(originally recorded by Neil Young)

Like I said above, I could literally post hours of covers that I love (maybe one day I will link to my Spotify covers playlist), but I think I'll conclude my selections with this one since it's probably my very favorite cover ever. ::sniffs:: How I miss TON! Especially this era TON. Peter Steele's been gone over three years now and I still can't believe it.

I may just take this theme and run with it, since I love so many cover songs. If you love the remake as much as I do, what are some of your favorites? Perhaps there are some out there that I haven't heard - yet.

    1. It had been a while for me, too. I was moving some of my old record albums into my new bedroom, and Theatre of Pain was one of them, so that sparked the memory :)

    1. Like me, I see you could do covers all day long, too! I LOVE Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt, and The Doors' cover of Gloria. Love Hendrix and GNR, too.

    2. That's so true, Kim. There are so many more on my list. However, there are MANY on my list that I really freakin' hate and should be disposed of from the music world forever. Maybe that will be a blog post ***I'LL*** do! haha! And speaking of judging books by their cover, I friended you on Goodreads in case you were wondering who the creeper was. ;)

    3. I have a few that I hate, but they are mainly sampled songs as opposed to straight up covers.

  4. Smoking in the Boys' Room is a great song! I don't see the remake being that different from the original. I loved the video.

    1. The remake's definitely not that much different from the original, but I do love the Crue's sound, so to me, that was enough of an update!

    1. I agree, Dwight's remake is pretty great, though not too terribly different from the original. However, it was Lyle Lovett who was married to Julia Roberts. Dwight seemed to have relationships with one hot babe after another in the 90s, though :)

  13. Well you already know how I feel about the Dwight cover of Elvis. one of my faves for sure. But cannot believe I forgot about Power Station!! that's another all time great one.
Did not know Smokin in the Boys Room was a cover -- will have to check out the original. somehow I still think I will be sticking with the Crue though.
Now Cinnamon Girl -- naturally Neil Young being Canadian, I am bound by partiotism to stand by him. haha. but I gotta say, this is a really rockin great cover of it. love the edge it gives it.

    1. I prefer the Crue for sure, though their cover isn't that much different than the original. The Crue, Power Station, and Dwight are all examples of basically just covering a song (though that doesn't do the remixes justice, because IMO they are all at least as good as the originals), but Type O really took their covers and ran with them. Their cover of Cinnamon Girl sounds absolutely NOTHING like the original. I definitely prefer theirs, but understand why you are obligated to prefer the original!
