Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a winner!

Despite Guns N Roses having a much more well-known cover of "Sympathy" and an unknown but very worthy cover by alt/indie bands Band of Skulls and John and Jehn that you should listen to if you get the chance, I decided to pair another virtually unknown version by Horacio Hernandez to a cover by Jane's Addiction.

I cast my vote is for Jane's Addiction. I do love the flavor of Hernandez's rendition, but the Jane's cover is simply stunning. Both added their own distinct sounds to the song, but I feel that all the whoops and slight echoes give Jane's Addiction's version a refreshingly wild and slightly sinister feel, which grabs my attention on every level. With an official tally (including mine) of 5-1 in favor of Jane's Addiction, they clearly took this one. Not only that, but the overwhelming majority of you prefer it to the original by The Rolling Stones! And this surprised me.

Thanks for playing along, and be sure to come back and see me on the 15th!

  1. Can't say this is surprising. I really liked the JA version.

    1. I feel bad admitting this, but I knew from the very beginning JA would get my vote. I just tried very hard to find something that would give it a good run for the money. I was neither surprised nor not surprised, since this was my first real battle and I didn't quite know what to expect. But yeah...I really liked the JA version, too.

    1. Yay! I am so excited about next time, too :)

And yeah....a slam, indeed! If not for Arlee's vote, it would have been a shutout.

Congratulations on your BOTB. I thought it was a good one because you presented two versions that were radically different from each other. Occasionally people will use two versions so alike that it's hard to find any difference to really separate them and determine how I should vote.

This was a good one. And since I now know you're a regular BOTBer, I have you permanently linked at my blog, so as others gradually realize you're truly in, you should begin receiving more votes.

See ya again on the 15th.

    1. Thanks! I actually love seeing how different people can make a song sound...not necessarily or only from the original, but from other covers. It's a lot of fun!

  4. Oh, I think I still like the Stones version the best -- but am really happy that Jane's Addiction won out. It's so hard to do a cover well - there are only a few I like.

    1. I think I do, too....but it's very, very VERY close. See, I love covers. Sure, there are a lot of them I don't like, but for the most part I enjoy hearing how others spin the song. But a lot of people feel like you, that it's hard to do a cover well.

  5. Well, I still like the originality of the Hernandez version. When a cover version takes me by surprise in a good way I tend to latch onto it. However Jane's Addiction's version was outstanding no doubt.

    1. It does take you by surprise in a good way, doesn't it? I was blown away by Hernandez, just not on the same level as JA took me with it. Both are very worthy covers, IMO.
