The perfect way to spend a spring afternoon

This is a photo I recently took when the weather first started getting really nice. (I've already Facebooked and Instagrammed it, so it may look familiar to regular readers already.) It was an amazing day - I had the day off work and was able to sit on my back porch to read my Flea Market Style magazine while enjoying some light lemonade in one of my newest thrifted treasures, one of my Mid-Mod Federal Glass roly-polys in Black Diamond. And I always have a favorite pair of cateye sunglasses to keep the sun's rays out of my eyes!

What are some of your favorite ways to spend a warm spring afternoon?

The trip back home

Here are just a few instgram photos from my trip back home this past weekend. It was cold and cloudy the entire time:

But not even the cold could chase away the coziness of my childhood home and getting to visit family. Totally frivolous soaks in a hot bath helps with coziness, too! I like my water just south of scalding, and I'm surprised the windows only got this steamy:

A trip home just isn't complete without reading late into the night, playing Rook with the family, and enjoying my Mom's amazing cooking. Especially her cherry cream cheese pie! Here's the crust. I forgot to get a pic of the finished (and quickly FINISHED OFF!) pie.

And how's this for a trip down memory lane? It's my much-coveted and beloved pink faux-fur coat from my 10th grade year! I must have begged for this for months on end, and I finally got it for Christmas. I adored that coat, and still do! I will absolutely be wearing it regularly again once I reach my goal weight - I was quite tiny in high school, so I'm not quite ready for it yet :)

And what road trip is complete without a kick-ass playlist? Here's just a bit of what I listened to for the four hour trip:

Ball and Biscuit - The White Stripes
l.A. Woman - The Doors
Lit Up - Buckcherry
You Can't Kill Rock and Roll - Ozzy Osbourne
Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters
Sister Christian - Night Ranger
Heaven Nor Hell - Volbeat
Living After Midnight - Judas Priest
California - Social Distortion
Dead Souls - Nine Inch Nails
(Listen here)

I'm so looking forward to my next trip home; hopefully it will be warmer and not for such a short amount of time.

January 2013 daisy

Back in 2010 when I had to retire my beloved 15 year old Mustang, I bought a 2002 New Beetle. One of my favorite things about my bug, Bibi, is the dashboard bud vase. Beginning last year I replaced the daisy every month, and I never gave much thought to trying to document it. This year? I am!

Without further ado, here's January 2013's daisy:

Laid-back New Year's Eve revelry

I'm still working a good bit and still pretty rushed and tired, so this week's WWs will be mostly wordless.

I got the opportunity to try a bit of Absinthe for the first time on New Year's Eve. I've been meaning to for a while now, ever since some goths I hung out with ages ago were all about it. You've already seen the top left photo if you follow me on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or read my first post of the new year. Here are a few more! It's soooooo pretty, and smelled so good! But I mainly just wanted to get a bit of a buzz without having to consume copious quantities of alcohol.

I needn't have worried; I'm so much of a lightweight I couldn't even take more than a few sips. And either that stuff is nowhere near as potent as I've been led to believe, or I just didn't drink enough. One of my Facebook friends tried some that actually came from Europe, and it did nothing for her, either. I'm inclined to agree with her when she said it's apparently not as potent as the stuff the lucky bastards of the 18th century drank!

New Year's Eve was pretty uneventful here. After a short work shift, I went and joined a gym! Can you believe it? And that evening, after my few sips of absinthe, I watched Green Day's performance on the I ♥ Radio Festival, blogged and facebooked a bit, and decided against a facelift for the blog.

Maybe one of these days!

Here's a sunburst for your Wednesday

Now, for Wordful Wednesday....

I got myself an iPhone earlier this week. I'm brand new to all things Apple, so the first thing I did was start snapping random pics. That photo up there? Happens to be one of my very favorite things in my home, my sunburst mirror. I love all things retro, so this was a perfect fit. The best part about it was that I picked it up from Family Dollar for about $8 a few years ago. I'm glad I did, too, because I haven't seen them there since then.

Oh, and I had to try this Instagram business out, too (but before all hell broke loose - which is a great example of my comedic timing!) so this has been run through an Instagram filter. I forget which one, but I'm pretty sure it was 1977.

A little bit of Christmasy Folk Art

Here's an adorable set of vintage nesting angels (all nested in this photo) I found for about a quarter in a thrift store. They're a terrific edition to my hodge-podge holiday decor! I don't have a clue how old they are, but I love that they appear to be aged. And I thought they complimented the rail of my weathered deck quite well in this photo.

Thrifty finds are amazing!

Yum!

For today's Wordless and Wordful Wednesday, how about some yummy cream cheese wonton?

I just love takeout from my favorite local Chinese eatery, Meteor Buffet! And these adorable vintage Homer Laughlin platters and sauce cups I picked up while thrifting a while back are so perfect for serving!

Wordful Wednesday:

I'm not a beer connoisseur by any means, but I've been trying to broaden my horizons by trying new things, and this week I tried a local-ish beer, Back Forty Beer Co.'s "Truck Stop Honey." We've been having triple-digit heat here in Alabama, and this was mighty good while watching the sun set from my back porch.

How refreshing! On a hot day, nothing beats a cold beverage in a frosty glass. My choice of beverage this day was water, which really does taste better in a pretty glass! And I fell in love with these tiki-tastic acrylic glasses from Target. Way cheap, and perfect for summer!

And now, for Wordful Wednesday....

Three words: Fun, funky fabric! I have a cute little project in store for it, and I can't wait to get started. And then show it off (so this fabric will be making a repeat appearance in a post here in the hopefully not too distant future). I just hope I don't mess it up! As for the project? I can't reveal it because it's a surprise! Literally, a surprise. One that I hope will make someone very happy, the way they have made me and my family happy. And the way this fabric makes me happy when I look at it. I just hope they don't read the blog and ruin the surprise for themselves!

Head on over to Seven Clown Circus for more Wordful Wednesday!

Wordful Wednesday:

This is a photo taken of a painting done by my uber-talented oldest son. It hung in his school's main office for a month, was in the fine arts show, and got him an offer of money. But he turned that down, because it is now one of two paintings for me to choose from for my Mother's Day present.

Wordful Wednesday: Hydrangeas. Hated by Madonna (and she'd probably especially hate these, as they came from a common supermarket), but loved by me. I want them in any and ALL colors, though I've heard that if you plant them in your yard the ph of the soil determines their color.

"Rainy Fall Day"

Wordful Wednesday....

This was taken on the road recently while taking my son to his father's for a visit. That orange ball in the middle of all the gray was the sun; too bad my BB didn't see it as well as I did! This was coming out of a frightful bit of a storm while driving, so we were still going at a snail's pace...

In keeping with the 'spooky' theme, I decided to go with real spiders this week Photobucket

Who needs fake Halloween decorations when you have these critters hanging out around your house? The top and bottom spiders have long since gone, but the big guy in the middle photo just showed up the other night. He's just hanging there in our front doorway, and that's his underside, as this was taken from inside the house. He was kind enough to build his web around where we walk through. A very polite spider, indeed. I included this photo not because I think it's all that good, but because you can actually see his handiwork, or the spider web.

The female in the top photo was here sometime in August. She was next to the front door, but she packed up and left after a few days. I think we were too active and disruptive to her.

The one on the bottom is just a shadow, zoomed in and cropped. That one I believe is also a female, and was also here sometime in August. She and another female just dropped down out of the tree overlooking the back porch, at dusk, and in almost perfect synchronicity.

Spiders are so fascinating!

My Chemical Romance

From Honda Civic Tour. Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood. Atlanta, GA. 9.21.11

For more Wordless Wednesday, go here.

And now, for Wordful Wednesday: this photo was taken on my little Blackberry Curve with no flash at the Honda Civic Tour's Atlanta stop. The band pictured here is My Chemical Romance. This was taken IN THE PIT (!!!!), so it was also taken amidst a throng of wildly jumping, knocking-into-people fans. I actually kinda dig its graininess.

Other bands were Blink 182 and Matt & Kim.

A rock and roll show is always a great way to spend the night!
